Mohit Kumhar represents the younger generation carrying forward the 27-generation lineage of Molela terracotta sculptors. Learning naturally within the family workshop beside his father Dinesh Chandra Kumhar, mother Kailash Devi, and brother Umesh Kumhar, he participates in the daily work of clay preparation, relief sculpting, and firing.
In a traditional craft where every large piece requires multiple hands — from preparing the river clay to modelling the temple arches and deity figures — Mohit works across the full cycle of the studio’s creations. He specialises in beating uniform foundation slabs (thala) with the wooden pindi mallet and raising hollow-relief (khokhla) forms for multi-tile architectural murals.
When the family prepares the open-air circular bhatti kiln, Mohit coordinates the stacking of cured relief plaques, insulating the chamber with broken terracotta shards (thekra) and monitoring the wood-and-dung firing temperature so that thick narrative panels vitrify evenly without thermal cracking.
Alongside his studio sculpting, Mohit serves as a youth masterclass demonstrator for visiting architecture students, school groups, and cultural travellers in Molela, guiding beginners through their first hand-built clay relief tiles and wheel-thrown vessels.
Together with his family, he is committed to preserving the authenticity, zero-mould hand-building technique, and living heritage of Molela’s 800-year GI-tagged terracotta art, documenting each custom installation from the raw Banas River earth to permanent architectural mounting.
